Adamant db2 catalog PDF Print E-mail
Written by Chintan Rajyaguru
Saturday, 06 May 2006

DB2 cataloging gave me a surprise yesterday. I was under the impression that you don't need to reboot a Unix machine in most cases, certainly not after any installation or configuration change. DB2 catalog (actually uncatalog) command made a dent to that impression.

To make my rant effective, let me quickly discuss what is cataloging.

IBM download director PDF Print E-mail
Written by Chintan Rajyaguru
Tuesday, 07 March 2006

Is something wrong with the IBM's download director or has my network gone bad? I work for a consulting company that is an IBM partner and as a result I can download stuff from IBM's partnerworld website. I used to choose the download director, which is an applet that makes multiple connections and can pause and restart and download. But every time I choose the download director, it stops working after a while. My laptop shows that I am (wirelessly) connected, my desktop shows that the (wired) connection is alive but nothing works!!! No page loads and the download director shows "connection refused" message. The ipconfig command returns all the values except the "Connection specific DNS suffix" entry shows nothing next to it.

Portal Installation is easy PDF Print E-mail
Written by Chintan Rajyaguru
Saturday, 18 February 2006
Think you can run a Java based portal server on a machine with less than 512 MB RAM? Think again! I realized this when I tried running IBM Websphere portal test environment on my home laptop with just 512 MB RAM. Obviously it didn't work but my desperation to write at least one JSR 168 portlet led me to download Apache Jetspeed2. I just wanted to write this note to make it known that Jetspeed2 installation is easier than it may appear. Before downloading and installing Jetspeed, I did a Google search to get some information (especially installation instructions). There was not much and the information I found talked about using maven etc.

Ready to roll with Ruby? Watch out for this! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Chintan Rajyaguru

There are very few people in the software development community who haven't even heard of Ruby and rails yet. Ruby is a new programming language and rails is a framework to create MVC applications. The Ruby and Rails combination is believed to make the web application development fairly easy. Some call it better perl http://www.artima.com/weblogs/viewpost.jsp?thread=141312 and others believe it will take over the web application development world. Time will tell the future of Ruby but for now I have decided to check it out.

SOA and Web Services are not the same PDF Print E-mail
Written by Chintan Rajyaguru
Thursday, 08 September 2005
Information Technology loves buzz words. These days the hot words are Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web Services. These are hot words because the IT and business community think they can address challenges of agility, cost reduction, deriving business value through technology and IT/business alignment through loose coupling, implementation independence and flexibility (go optimism go!).

Services and Components PDF Print E-mail
Written by Chintan Rajyaguru
Monday, 29 August 2005
We all have heard both the words: Services and Components. But not many have thought about the difference between the two. There is not much difference from the implementation perspective. We may afford not to care about the difference and implement systems as sets of components. When needed, we can use vendor provided tools and “easily” convert component(s) into service(s).
